In the end of my sophomore year, I built a prototype for a breathalyzer locked safe to be used to lock up guns and other belongings from the intoxicated as part of an effort to design a device with the intent of reducing domestic violence and suicide rates. In presenting this for an entrepreneurship class for the university, MLive interviewed me for an article (linked above) about the device and how I could see it making an impact. I am currently in talks with the Depression Center at the university about using grant funding to bring this product to market as a precaution for suicide prevention.
Challenges Faced:
Properly calibrating the Arduino using a potentiometer as well as variables in the programming to make sure that the alcohol content threshold was properly set.
